In Windows 8.1, the Search charm will provide global search results powered by Bing in a rich, simple-to-read, aggregated view of many content sources (the web, apps, files, SkyDrive, actions you can take) to provide the best "answer" for your query. We think this will really change the way you interact with the Web and with windows making it quicker and easier to get things done. It is the modern version of the command line!
Windows 8.1 brings variable, continuous size of snap views. You will have more ways to see multiple apps on the screen at the same time. You can resize apps to any size you want, share the screen between two apps, or have up to four apps on screen. If you have multiple displays connected, you can have different Windows Store apps running on all the displays at the same time and the Start Screen can stay open on one monitor. This makes multi-tasking even easier. Also in Windows 8.1, you can have multiple windows of the same app snapped together - such as two Internet Explorer windows.

The Windows 8.1 preview is currently available as a free download via the Windows Store or an ISO file. If you currently have a Windows 8 computer, don't do an upgrade install. If you do, when the final version comes out at the end of August, you'll need to re-install all of your apps and desktop programs.
Windows 8.1 Preview ISO (*.iso) files are provided as an alternative to downloading Windows 8.1 Preview through Windows Store. You should only use the ISO files if you are an advanced user and want to install the preview on another partition, another PC, or a virtual machine.

Actually, if you're using Windows 8, upgrading is a cinch, but non-Windows 8 users can join the party, too, thanks to a downloadable .ISO disk image file of Windows 8.1(Opens in a new window). For this article, however, we'll assume you're already running Windows 8.
3. Decide Between Windows Store and ISO.Upgrading through the Windows Store is the more straightforward method, and if you're on a Windows RT tablet, it's your only option. The other choice is to download an ISO file and create a bootable DVD or USB drive using that. If you upgrade by booting the ISO, you won't be able to keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps, but upgrading from Windows 8 and the Windows Store you will. Here we'll focus on upgrading through the Windows Store. Those who are comfortable with creating bootable media from .ISO files probably don't need a step-by-step article such as this.
4. Enable the Update.To get started, head to -us/windows-8/preview-download(Opens in a new window) (the ISO is available for download from the bottom of this page, too). From here, click or touch the "Get the update" button. This will initiate a download of a very small .msu file that will make the update available on the Windows Store. You can either choose Download and then run it, or just Open.
From the Update page in the Store, click or touch the "Download" button. This starts a long multi-gigabyte download, so you may want to go grab a cup of coffee or tea. The progress bar switches messages several times, from Downloading, to Getting Update Ready, to Scanning, to Applying Changes, and Gathering info.
If you're running Windows 8 Enterprise or the Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation on your PC, you'll need to download the Windows 8.1 Preview ISO files (these should be available tomorrow June 27th).
Once you have downloaded the initial update file, run it to update your system (Figure) .After the update finishes you'll be asked to reboot, and once Windows re-starts you'll be offered the Windows 8.1 update from the Windows Store.Since the file size is close to 2.5 GB (or just under 2 GB for the 32-bit version) it may take some time to download (depending on your bandwidth and how busy Microsoft's download servers are).
There is also a new application drawer which you can activate by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. You can choose which programs get added to the Start Screen. You can also now adjust the width of the windows when you are running two applications side by side.

After downloading the ISO file, create a bootable DVD or USB drive with the help of a freeware as mentioned here. After creating the installation media, restart your system and boot using this bootable DVD or USB. Follow the setup instructions and install Windows 8.1 on a separate partition to dual boot between Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
as far as the install, it was painless and easy. download the standalone installer, after reboot i was informed that their was an update available. i was taken to the windows store where it was downloaded and installed. note: it seems to completely reinstall windows 8, setting and apps transferred over.

Windows 8.1 is a release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft. It was released to manufacturing on August 27, 2013, and broadly released for retail sale on October 17, 2013, about a year after the retail release of its predecessor, and succeeded by Windows 10 on July 29, 2015. Windows 8.1 was made available for download via MSDN and Technet and available as a free upgrade for retail copies of Windows 8 and Windows RT users via the Windows Store. A server version, Windows Server 2012 R2, was released on October 18, 2013.
At the 2014 Build conference, during April, Microsoft's Terry Myerson unveiled further user interface changes for Windows 8.1, including the ability to run Metro-style apps inside desktop windows, and a revised Start menu, which creates a compromise between the Start menu design used by Windows 7 and the Start screen, by combining the application listing in the first column with a second that can be used to display app tiles, whereas Windows 8.0 used a screen hotspot ("hot corner"). Myerson stated that these changes would occur in a future update, but did not elaborate further. A distinction is the removal of the tooltip with the preview thumbnail of the Start screen.
Windows 8.1 adds tighter integration with several Microsoft-owned services. OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive)[78] is integrated at the system level to sync user settings and files. Files are automatically downloaded in the background when they are accessed from the user's OneDrive folder, unless they are marked to be available offline. By default, only file metadata and thumbnails are stored locally, and reparse points are used to give the appearance of a normal directory structure to provide backwards compatibility.
